27th September 2024

Following on from our previous email, please see updated news regarding the works on Gayton Road.

  • The bridge has now been closed due to safety concerns over the structural stability of the carriageway and subsidence of the embankment. Exhibited by large depressions, cracks and uncontrolled movements of the carriageway.
  • The defects have been closely monitored for a number of years, and temporary two-way traffic lights have been in operation throughout the duration of the monitoring period.
  • As the carriageway surfacing has steadily got worse, the length of the lane closures (two-way lights) has been extended to ensure vehicles run on suitable pavement surfaces.
  • It has been determined that the safety of road users has been compromised, so the decision has been made to close the road to enable maintenance intervention.
  • The road will be closed for extended period of time to enable remedial works to be undertaken.
  • Kier are working in partnership with Network Rail to deliver the project as soon as feasibly possible. The are number of contributing technical and operational factors which need to be addressed prior to works commencing on site.
